Bear

April 4, 1990 - January 18, 2004

Bear was a little different from the rest of the dogs as he was a cocker spaniel not a boxer.  We loved him just the same, though.  He was an excellent dog; very sweet and loving.  When he was younger, he liked his mommy and daddy only.  He tolerated his Sissy (Bridget Justice Butler), but he didn't want anything to do with Lacie and Sara (they were only 3 years and 6 months old at the time).  As he and the kids grew older, he became more mellow around the kids and loved them and his Sissy.  His Sissy lived right next door and he and Roundy would stay at Sissy's house when his Mommy and Daddy were at work or away for the weekend.  Bear and Roundy especially liked to go out on the boat.  They liked to watch the fish come up out of the water.  As he got older, he was happy to stay home.  We called him our "million dollar" dog for the many accidents he had and his various illnesses.  Opposite of Roundy, Bear liked to wander out of the yard to visit other dogs.  He was hurt one time very badly and had to have surgery.  Another time he disappeared and we couldn't find him for a couple of days.  He was on medication for his thyroid and we were told he could only go a few days without it.  His Sissy put up flyers with a reward and looked everywhere for him.  We came home after looking for him and he was sitting on the porch and so happy to see us.  We think he knew when to come home to take his medication.  Bear was very smart.  He was a companion to Roundy.  He even taught Roundy how to go potty outside.  Other than his thyroid condition, Bear had to have his ears cleaned daily and had to have eye drops.  He knew when it was time to have his ears and eyes done.  He would come up to you with his head down and his ear turned towards you waiting for the drops.  He would never let you forget his pills and drops.  Sometimes when he was older, he would forget that he already had taken his pill and he would come to you and scratch your leg for his pill.  We would remind him that he already had taken it.  Bear completely lost his hearing and most of his eyesight.  When he wandered too far in the yard, we would send Roundy to go get him.  Inside the house, he would never let you out of his sight.  If you walked to another room, he would get up and follow you, no matter how comfortable he was.  Bear only lived 5 months after we lost Roundy.  We think he missed his lifelong friend.  On the day Bear died, he was laying on a blanket and his mommy told him it was ok to go.  She briefly walked out of the room and when she came back, he had passed.  Bear is buried in the yard right next to Roundy.  We will always love him and will never forget him!  We love you!
